"A whole civilization will die tonight." This is the President of the #UnitedStates threatening the annihilation of a civilization -publicly, in writing- unless #Iran submits to his terms by nightfall. This is a threat of #CrimesAgainstHumanity. And a threat of #Genocide in violation of the Genocide Convention. The war itself, launched by #Trump without #UN Security Council authorization, without lawful justification, without imminent threat, is a war of aggression -what the #Nuremberg Tribunal called the "supreme international crime," a crime against peace, from which all other war crimes flow, and a crime today codified as a #CrimeOfAggression, explicitly outlawed by the UN Charter. And now Trump is threatening to exterminate an entire civilization if he doesn't get his deal. Where is #Europe? Where are the US allies? When #Russia launched its ruthless war of aggression and campaign of war crimes against Ukraine and its civilian population, European nations and the #EU rightly did not equivocate. They condemned #Putin's actions in the strongest terms, sanctioned Kremlin officials and their enablers, stood on the right side of international law -loudly, collectively- and demanded justice for atrocity crimes. Today Putin and others are #ICC fugitives wanted for those crimes. The standard cannot change because the perpetrator is an old ally. That is not neutrality. That is complicity. That is the normalization of something that, left unnormalized, will lead to more death, more civilian suffering, and deeper global insecurity, more crimes and more impunity. The #EU, European governments, and US allies must speak up now. Not in careful diplomatic language. Not in "deep concern." In the unambiguous terms reserved for violations of the Genocide Convention, the laws of war, and the UN Charter. They must condemn Trump's threats for what they are: threats of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide. They must demand that these threats not be carried out, and make unequivocally clear that accountability and ⚖️ justice will follow for atrocity crimes already committed and any that follow. There can be no impunity for grave international crimes. Not for adversaries. Not for allies. The law is the law. The victims are victims. And justice must never be selective. They must make clear that no alliance, no trade relationship, no political calculation suspends the foundational rules of international law and order that Europe itself was built to uphold.
