There is absolutely zero historical evidence of them being taken aboard ships, which makes sense because they are incredibly humidity sensitive and are rendered completely unplayable in damp environments! The myth was pretty much started by soundtracks to pirate TV and video games of in the past 20 years, and now the association plagues all gurdy players.
