AI discourse on Mastodon feels increasingly binary: either total utopia or absolute doom.

I'm curious if this polarization reflects reality or just the loudest voices. I'm running a quick pulse check on how YOU all actually feel about LLMs and AI talk in your timeline.

No right answer, just honest data.

Results will be followed by a breakdown of where I stand on this spectrum.

Bye...

@riaschissl I wish there was more ML research discussion on the fediverse. The space is completely captured by Twitter/Substack. I think it's an unforced error from our communities

@riaschissl

I don't use it, and don't like it, but I don't knock people with legitimate use cases. I'm glad to see the courts holding the line against allowing it creative rights. It seems to be an asset in some scientific research, at the very least.

@Uair @riaschissl there are legitimate use cases of ML or AI, just not any real for LLMs, in my humble opinion. I don't mind ML or AI, it's LLMs, aka GenAI, that I have the most issues with

grand theft autocomplete machines.

@riaschissl I am concerned about AI because of the cognitive atrophy; the abuse to and exploitation of creatives' work; the prolipheration of mis and disinformation; the environmental effect; the contribution to wealth inequality; the devaluation of skill and effort and the effect on livelihoods. At the same time, there's no putting the jaenie back in the bottle. We need ethical, ecologically sound, non-reckless, well-regulated, healthy use.
@riaschissl I don't want to use, while I am kind of forced, both by expectations in work and gradual worsening quality of search results...
I want to see discussion, maybe not rage attacks - things I mostly see are rather calm talk about dangers, maybe because most popular/boosted acounts happen to be researchers, scientists educated in tech ethics. etc. At least in this most visible part of fediverse I rarely read blind angry hate posts in this topic, maybe cynic jokes about slop but these at least don't lead to thread-wars.

@riaschissl I'm finding myself having to use these things because of my current employment situation, and interested in discussion of the socioeconomic implications, and, because I understand that technological progress often ignores ethics, how it's going to impact me.

But I'm very much seeing cognitive atrophy in the people around me who use LLMs, and don't want to expose myself to more people who voluntarily choose self-harm by encouraging use.
