1. A new study claims trans care worsens mental health. It is fatally flawed. It didn't measure mental health—it measured psych visits. Even visits that stemmed from mandatory checkins, surgical pre-psych evals, or pre-treatment that was classified as post. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Fact Check: New Finnish "Study" Does Not Prove "Trans Youth Care Leads To Worse Outcomes"

The latest Kaltiala study is filled with fatal methodological flaws, and does not support claims made about trans youth care lacking efficacy.

2. The Finnish study tracks 2,083 youth from first clinic visit, not treatment start, and counts any specialist psychiatry visit as “psychiatric treatment.” That makes its headline result deeply misleading, especially since routine follow-up care itself appears to be counted as deterioration.

3. A closer look shows the study’s conclusions are not supported by its own data. That fits a pattern in Kaltiala’s work: flawed proxies, buried favorable findings, and sweeping claims. We've previously fact checked a similarly misleading "study": www.erininthemorning.com/p/fact-check...

Fact Checked: New Problematic "Finnish Study" Actually Shows Trans Care Saves Lives

A new study from Dr. Kaltiala in Finland is being used to claim that trans care is not lifesaving. Experts say this is false, and the study itself shows trans care likely saves lives.

4. The new study suffers from a massive case of surveillance bias. It treats routine, often mandatory psychiatric check-ins built into gender transition and legal or surgical care as evidence of psychiatric decline. That is not proof care failed. It is a textbook case of surveillance bias.
5. There's another fatal flaw in the Finnish study: it does not measure “before and after treatment.” It measures before and after first clinic appointment, then counts years of pre-treatment psychiatric surveillance as if it were caused by hormones. That is classic immortal time bias.
6. More darkly, if psychiatric visits increased, part of the cause may have been the clinic itself. Former patients describe Kaltiala’s clinic as degrading and abusive—exactly the kind of experience that could generate the very distress later counted as harm. The accounts of patients are harrowing.

Abusive Practices And Conversion Therapy Ties: The Right Latches Onto Finnish Doctor Kaltiala

Finish Doctor Riittakerttu Kaltiala published an article in Bari Weiss' The Free Press, stating she helped "pioneer" trans care. The reality is more akin to a horror story for patients at her clinic.

7. For example, A 13-year-old trans girl was asked by a male doctor in a room with three unfamiliar adults to describe what she thought about her naked body while looking in a mirror. The same patient was pressured to discuss her erections and urination with strangers.
8. A trans boy identified as “Mikko” was denied a diagnosis after years in the system because his hobbies were deemed “too girlish” and that he would be “too short” for a man and warned at every appointment that the process “could be terminated at any time.”
9. Bottom line: this study was built to produce an anti-trans result. It counts routine psychiatric contact as deterioration, folds mandatory monitoring into “harm,” misdates treatment, and then sends the result through a political machine built to attack trans care.

The fact that I knew who the author was without being "in the scene" shows how much Kartila sucks.
