It’d been so long since I’d seen The Killer, I forgot how many tropes originated from this single film!

Was a treat to see it in the theater tonight, and the short chat with John Woo screened afterwards was a nice bonus.

@driph

Yes! I rewatched The Killer (and A Better Tomorrow) late last year and felt so much nostalgia seeing just how many Woo hallmarks and broader- influence tropes that began here.

Jealous you got to see it in a cinema, and John Woo chat is a double-bonus. 😎

#film

@imalcolm They were screening them once a month, we got to see Hard Boiled but I ended up missing A Better Tomorrow. It’s getting me back into an action and martial arts kick now.

@driph

Excellent! I need to keep an eye out at a couple of indie theatres for revival/classics screenings.

Coincidentally think I've inadvertently slid into a martial arts/gun-fu/sword revival thing: just checked my Letterboxd and since mid-late last year, after nothing like that for years, I've seen The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, all four Ip Mans, Yakuza Apocalypse, Big Trouble in Little China, Shaolin Soccer, Tai-Chi Master, Kung Fu Hustle, Lady Snowblood and Zatoichi. It's a mood!

@imalcolm @driph City on Fire came out on blu-ray recently and that's a fantastic movie that I hadn't seen since the 90s

@COMPU73E @driph

Oh I haven't seen City on Fire since the 90s either! That sent me on a search and was happy to find it streaming free via Kanopy as well, so have added to my watch list. 😎

@COMPU73E oh wow thats one I havent seen in ages
@imalcolm great picks! We just watched The Grandmaster the other night, and now I want to go through the Ip Man films as well, as I've never seen em.

@driph

I haven't seen The Grandmaster yet. Just added to the list - cheers!

I really enjoyed the Ip Man films, there is a bit of a drop-off as the series progresses, but they're all good, IMHO. (I just checked and I ranked 1 and 2 as four stars, and 3 and 4 as three and a half stars.)

@imalcolm I loved The Grandmaster, but I’m a fan of anything by Wong Kar Wei. Lush as always.

@driph

"Lush" is the perfect descriptor for so much of his work. 😎
