i don't know how to explain to ai bros that having your slopbot 'summarize', a piece of code defeats the entire purpose of developing an understanding in the first place

for example, jwz's unknown pleasures screensaver: we went to figure out how it worked, and so we find ourselves... reading the source code! and in so doing! developing an understanding of how it works! fancy that!

if i go and type claude how does this work then i am not doing the part of developing understanding where i actually develop the understanding

@atax1a not sure how to get people to learn that learning is important.

yes you get "results" but do you understand them? Do you grow? the computer doesn't, that's for sure.

I have tried and failed. it is... exhausting.

@atax1a it reminds me of Freire's description of the banking model of education where the teacher has knowledge they deposit into the students, and how unsuitable that actually is as an education

the irony as I talked about a while ago is that he says a lot about education being a conversation and that's so true but LLM chatbots provide a facsimile of a conversation

@atax1a surely all the knowledge in the world can be expressed perfectly in 1-2 paragraphs. surely the acquisition of knowledge and understanding is not itself a skill!
