While it's still cool enough to run the wood stove I am traveling back a few hundred years to hand make tapers using molds I found at a flea market. #candles #maker #history #vintage
Per request: the candles I made from my antique taper mold. I'm happy with the results given this is the first time I've attempted making tapers. #candles #tapers #maker #HandMade #reuse #antique
Those look super professional! This might be something we should look into. : ). We were gifted some hand made copper candlesticks that have considerable variation - some candles fit, and others lean or fall out. Making our own candles for them might be our best option.
@Xover0 I've seen many of these molds since I bought my own. At least around here, they're not hard to find. They weren't difficult to make. Getting the wicks laced through the tiny holes was the most complicated part. Then you seal the hole, tie the other end of the wick to a skewer, make sure the wicks are centered and then pour the wax. As it cools the wax shrinks a little so you may have to top if off. When cool, stick the mold in the refrigerator for a bit & they pop out.
We're definitely going to research this :)
@Xover0 I was making more candles so I took a picture to show you how the mold is set up to give you a better idea than my words.
Nice! Thank you!! How do the candles not get stuck in the tubes and snap into pieces when you try to release them?
@Xover0 You can buy mold release but I just stick them in the refrigerator for 10-20 minutes. That causes the wax to shrink a little and the tapers pop right out with a tap on my work bench. You only need them to pop out a bit. Once they're loose you can grab the wick and pull if they're a bit stubborn.
oh sweet! thanks for this info. The store bought candle sticks we have are curved like bananas in handmade candle sticks that don't grip them well :)
@Xover0 If you have a little wax you could melt it and dip the bottoms in it until they're the proper size for the holders. Or you could just hang them on this. I wouldn't light them if you choose the second option.
hahaha! banana candle flambé
@Xover0 Here's the other end of the mold. The wicks are laced through the holes and sealed with putty to hold them and keep the wax from leaking through. They sell special putty for this but I had some Sticky Tack handy and used that. You can use anything flexible, sticky and easily removed. I keep reusing my putty.
