Scientists warn the Gulf Stream is shifting north, which means an ocean current collapse is imminent

Scientists have detected a northward Gulf Stream shift that may signal a looming Atlantic climate tipping point.

@CharlieMcHenry while the article is quite interesting and informative, it does not state that the collapse is imminent.
@prefec2 @CharlieMcHenry In fact, at the end of the article, it states that a collapse is not imminent.
@MFennVT @prefec2 @CharlieMcHenry "Multiple studies suggest the AMOC is weakening with some projecting it could even collapse this century as global warming disrupts the balance of heat and salinity that keeps it moving." https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/11/climate/ocean-currents-amoc-collapse-extreme-cold
Scientists mapped what happens if a crucial system of ocean currents collapses. The weather impact would be extreme

An AMOC collapse would usher in global weather and climate shifts β€” including plunging temperatures in Europe, which relies on the current system for its mild weather.

@MFennVT @prefec2 @CharlieMcHenry there's no consensus on if or when, but this century is imminent enough for me
@independentpen @MFennVT @CharlieMcHenry I assume that all in this thread agree that an AMOC collapse is a dramatic event which will change the lifelyhood of billions of people, reshape where food grows, changes coastlines etc. Imminent suggests, however, that something is definitely to happen now. This is how people would perceive the term and then when two years have passed without collapse, they will assume it is no longer a danger and never was.
