so i formatted my laptop to ubuntu yesterday. so far the nicest two things:
- the touchpad support is way way way nicer. windows, for whatever reason, makes dealing with the touchpad miserable.

- screenshots are just 'built in'. i dont have to use snipping tool, i dont have to go fuck about with powertools and setup custom key shortcuts. it .. just works.

oh and i installed asusctl so now i can fuck with my cooling fan curves and keyboard lighting :D

bwahahaha i can get synology drive to work via flatpak!
I havent fully configured it yet (i need to move the backups to where they will live now) but it loads, it can talk to my array, and im to the point where its specifying source/dest stuff

so yeah.
that means obsidian, all my gifs, 1password - everything should 'just work'.

hey, arc raiders worked without too much fuss!
neat!
oh
astra monitor
if youre using gnome.
if you ever used istat menus on a mac? this is that, but free :D

also also

if you like that quicklook feature on macs where you hit spacebar and it gives you a preview of a file? (super handy in a folder with 4000 gifs in it)

apt-get install gnome-sushi

well fuck me.
i can use fx_cast on firefox in ubuntu to remote control jellyfin in the browser. it 'just worked'.

dude i fought with this for MONTHS in windows

@Viss Yeah...sweet Jellyfinin' in the browser. I really need to finish setting mine up. 😝
@Viss you'll need a Linux hints blog at this rate
@Viss Keep them Ubuntu tips coming!
@Viss Holy crap. I have been looking for something like this forever
@jalefkowit also also also, apt-get install ffmpegthumbnailer if all the mp4s you pull from imgur and s3nd.pics end up as mp4s, you'll get thumbs of them toooooooo
@Viss That looks pretty awesome (but I use KDE)
@Taffer i think youd just hafta compile it yourself. i havent looked to see if itll work on kde
@Viss Says Gnome specifically, but you never know!
@Viss it’s been what, 9 months? That you’ve been waiting for kernel and driver support?
@Viss I feel like anytime a Linux distribution has better hardware support than Windows, a product manager at Microsoft should be required to commit seppuku
@jalefkowit see if that was the case youd expect their output to improve
@Viss I agree about screenshots *however* everyone should check out flameshot
@aburka i was using flameshot a lot on my desktop til a recent update sorta borked it, and it quit working with my hotkey

@Viss so you heard that Entra ID SSO for Linux require Ubuntu, right?

I missed out on this because I am using RaspiOS with KDE Plasma and that is too Debian for Microsoft at the moment.

Yes. My laptop is running a Raspberry PI CM5 πŸ‘€

@sassdawe wat. no. im thankful that I don't have to integrate with microsoft in that way. youd think linux is linux, right? like, theres gotta just be some library or some config file so that the sso bit works right, yes?
@Viss hooray!!!
@llorenzin it took a while but all the right stuff finally landed in the ubuntu main distro stuffs. only extras i needed to do were to paste in a few args into /etc/default/grub so that it was possible to do screen dimming, but everything "just works" now, so im slowly re-bolting all my userspace shit back into place :D :D :D

@Viss not sure how much Linux exp you have, but did you know about 'select text with mouse' + middle click to insert? :)

No ctrl+c / ctrl+v needed.
