“Embers of Home”, mixed media on wood panel.
This was partially inspired by the Danish concept of hygge. I wanted to make something as a gift for a friend who was returning home to Denmark after 30 or so years living abroad. I used the key as a symbol of going home, added the mermaid to represent her hometown of Copenhagen, and painted gold foil flowers to resemble daisies as the Danish national flower is a type of daisy. I found the poem in a booklet I had and it fit in well. Then I chose colors that, to me, felt like they represented what I read about hygge, which is a sense of warmth, comfort, and coziness. The article mentioned candles and pillows and warm blankets. Hopefully, I gave it a respectful interpretation.
