Alright putting out the call: any good fedi music-related accounts to follow? I have a lack of visibility into what the “scene” is like here and would love some recommendations.
Fedi is cool but I do sometimes feel like I’ve got more of a gamedev and programming audience here, which isn’t really my main thing admittedly
Also, band account exists
Yeah I know 1/2 of AE is here but that does not a “scene” make
“How do I connect with artists on the Fediverse?” Cheat Sheet

“How do I connect with artists on the Fediverse?” Cheat Sheet This question crops up regularly on the fediverse, so here is a cheat sheet that should help anyone interested in finding fedi music and connecting with fedi musicians to get started. TL;DR NHAM (@[email protected]): This site, featuring links to fedi music news, reviews, events, [...]

NHAM

Clarifying that this is kind of for @waxlimbs .

Finding a lot of really cool ambient / modular / electronica musicians! Very few bands though.

@lexfeathers @waxlimbs i haven't seen a lot of bands or artists using mastodon compared to instagram or tiktok. i think it's mostly due to the media format, you know? Metastatic Cancer and Blunky have the infrastructure to host and deliver music and video en masse. plus, It's Where Everyone Is™
@Foxdodge I'm well aware yeah, doesn't mean I can't try in the long game 😎
@lexfeathers i know \@mirlo\@musician.social sometimes reposts stuff from other musicians using the platform so that could be a good starting point

@lexfeathers

have you looked into
https://fedi.directory/tag/music/

also,
look at public timelines ('Live feeds' > 'This server') of instances dedicated to music:

also, ours:

Interesting accounts to follow on Mastodon and the Fediverse

@lexfeathers check @TIBtv, also the #bonkwave, lots of sound/music people over at sono.mu instance, there are a lot of different music subcultures here so def poke around and find your thing.

@lexfeathers
Me! But also @airadam (especially if you like hip hop), and @blogamf (for Afropop) and @AccordionBruce (obviously for anything accordion related).

If I think of more--and I know there are a few whose names elude me right now--I will add them here.

@lexfeathers
Oh yeah, @dgar makes his own rock/metal music and also has lots of funny posts

@SallyStrange @lexfeathers @airadam @blogamf
Another big vote for @thetonearm 😎

And @buffyleigh whose @1001OtherAlbums project I just heard of and look forward to following

Also the weekly Sunday @listeningclub — where everyone downloads or streams a mystery album and comments with #ListeningClub

Not many “Musician promoting my new album/tour/swag” here, which personally I wouldn’t mind having in one place for efficiency, and to get friends off the corporate sites

@AccordionBruce + @thisoccasionalsociety

thank you for your kind plugs! it feels good to be breaking through on the fedi 🚀

@lexfeathers check out the #pastagang tag, it can also be followed for updates from the collective of livecoders congregating around strudel.cc and nudel.cc
@joeldn @lexfeathers also check out the @pastagang bot, it will retoot the hashtag (and a few more related) :)

@lexfeathers @nham - is a music hub for allsorts and is linked in with any number of acts and aggregators of sorts
@strim - hosts many live streams and IRL gigs - check out their calendar
@etherdiver - reviews music every week
@thetonearm - does deep music reviews and articles
@computermusicscene - live streams gigs
+1 for @TIBtv (you should submit some videos as the production values on your stuff is 🔥 )
@audiointerface - host a bunch of electronic facing radio shows

hope this is useful

@lexfeathers
For music, from the top of my head, you can follow @BarbNerdy @tasmo @saetchmo @inpc @data0 @herr_irrtum @revengeday @TodePond @thomas @resieguen @schratze @drmotte @dotakehr @irieites_de @hardwax @somafm @blogamf and many many others.

Maybe they have starter packs for you or more suggestions

One of the best features here is that you can follow hashtags. So if you just browse around a few likely ones (e.g. #music has almost 900 posts today, and then you could pick others more specifically relevant to your genre of greatest interest) then you can pick the most interesting to you (or the ones with the best signal:noise ratio) and curate a timeline for yourself.

@lexfeathers I'm not quite a band, but a singer-songwriter with an electric guitar. If something in the vein of early Mountain Goats or Daniel Johnston is of interest, I'm on here.
@bloodlessgirls @lexfeathers That description gets a follow from me!
@lexfeathers there's a rather specific slice (squeeze) of music that https://mastodon.social/@AccordionBruce shares

@lexfeathers Hey. I am a smashed wicker basket that makes weird noises.

Have you seen http://bandwagon.fm ? A fediverse connected social app for musicians

https://theindiebeat.fm/ is an online radio station linked to it and also has a music video channel at https://tv.theindiebeat.fm/

@lexfeathers I write about folk, country, and Americana for several publications and I edit the queer country zine @rainbowrodeomag

@lexfeathers

#hashtags are vital for finding community sharing info.

#music #musiclovers #scene 👆 🎵

And specifics #rock #jazz #mozart #house #metal ?

@lexfeathers @radiofreefedi was a great resource and a fantastic and surprising streaming, but it is over now, sadly, although maybe you can find artists in the archive.
@lexfeathers Hashtags are your friend. I’d start with #music but there is also hashtags for genres like #jazz and #technicaldeathmetal etc. 🖖

@lexfeathers I've been following @1001OtherAlbums for a while and they seem to have a variety of interesting recommendations.

1001 Other Albums (@[email protected])

Psst, do you need some cool music to listen to? Dig if you will The List of over 1001 albums from 115+ places/peoples, as recommended by 130+ Fedizens (https://1001otheralbums.com/the-list/)! Think "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", but, like, NOT just Western pop. We chose these albums not because of popularity or sales or reviews by influencers and whatnot, but rather because they’re important to us personally and/or represent bands/genres/peoples not given enough love in 'official' lists. For the last 2+ years, we've featured an album from The List every few days on the 1001 Other Albums blog (https://1001otheralbums.com/). These spotlights are written by either guest Fedizen contributors or project steward @[email protected], and are automatically cross-posted in full to the Fediverse at @[email protected]. New spotlights are also summarized and linked here on linernotes.club. The plan is to eventually cover every album on The List, and so far we’ve featured over 230 albums! Sometimes we also do some extra fun things like Fedi-wide AOTY lists, fake festivals, and Fedi-sourced oral history posts, and every once in a while we boost other cool music-related things. Give us a follow here and/or the blog, I bet you'll hear something you dig. 👉 And, if you want to share your thoughts on one of the albums not yet featured via guest post, OR want to add your favourite albums that aren't yet on The List, hmu! 👈 #introduction #music #1001OtherAlbums #MusicDiscovery #ListenToThis

@lexfeathers what sort of music? I sing in a choir (I am not alone in doing that here) there are a few composers here too and also there is a music server whose name I forget

@lexfeathers Back when I was involved with running the Fedivision song contest in 2024, we were about 50% electronic music and 50% everything else. I feel that this hasn’t changed much. @sknob has sent you the most important link-of-links from which you can find hundreds of us.

My music is folk stage shanty pop rock, if that floats your boat. Link in bio.
