Just remembered that #RayBradbury's #Fahrenheit451 predicted (something like) Bluetooth earbuds about 50 years before they became a thing.

I remember reading that part of the book in the early 90s and being rather puzzled about it. 😄

@rl_dane

Bradbury’s writing isn’t really about predicting future tech, though. 🫠

If 451 was confusing, I highly recommend trying The Martian Chronicles. It’s one of my five favorite all-time books; it’s both more accessible and, I think, much more interesting.

@amin

I remember being freaked out by the 1970s miniseries. 😄

@amin

I mean, I wasn't really saying that it was, only that it kind of did?

@rl_dane

Sure, haha. People equating sci-fi authors with futurists is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, so that was just my first reaction.

(Also, I’m 98% certain other authors of the time had similar earpieces)

@amin @rl_dane Such a good book series!

@dm @rl_dane

Series?

@amin @rl_dane Wasn't the Marian Chronicles part of the John Carter series? Or am I mis-remembering?

@dm @rl_dane

I think you’re probably thinking of something else. The Martian Chronicles is a novelized collection of short stories Bradbury wrote set on Mars, many with shared characters and themes.

@amin @rl_dane Ahh, my mistake. Apologies. Carry on.

@dm @rl_dane

Are you thinking of this?

That starts about 30 years earlier and was written by Burroughs. :)

@rl_dane I'm still a bit puzzled. I mean: That's it? With the battery? What, several hours? How?!

@steeph

Bluetooth is pretty wizard tech.

...except when you're waiting for it to connect/disconnect. XD
