@nora I've been reading the Foundation series by Asimov and there's one point where he notes that a specific character *does not smoke* as an indication not to trust this character. He even invents the idea of a micro-nuclear powered ash tray! It's incredible how much of a miss that ended up being!

I'm now choosing to believe that all those fixed communication devices attached to desks, walls, etc in older shows and films, are a deliberate choice by the societies in question, having seen the harm caused by always on communication / computation.
