Irish writer Colm Tóibín addresses what Trump has shown the world about Americans, and Americans about themselves:

"Tóibín believes Trump has indelibly tarnished the idea of the US as the so-called land of the free. 'America can never really lift its head again,' he says."

Colm Tóibín on a post-Trump world: ‘America has a stain on its soul’

The Booker Prize-winning author of ‘Brooklyn’ is not one for parties, preferring to spend his time either at home or in the library. He speaks with Claire Allfree about his hermit lifestyle, his new collection of short stories – and the irreversible damage done by Donald Trump’s presidency to America’s legacy

@wdlindsy

Hmm... have the fash yet actually *removed* the poem that starts

“Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” etc?

@bytebro @wdlindsy I think that it suits right-wing governments to maintain the myth of being a freedom-loving country. Sure, they're probably going to invoke the imagery of "Uncle Sam" more than "Lady Liberty" but:

  • Reagan and his "shining city upon a hill" speech relied on this idea of the US being a "beacon" (note the Liberty-style shout-out) to the world
  • people have been pointing out the hypocrisy for years (eg, Lou Reed in the 80s (?) singing "your poor huddled masses, let's club em to death, get it over with")
