Sea ice extent in the Bering remains near record high levels in the eastern Bering Sea but well below normal on the Russian side in NSIDC data. Large area of open water now extends into the Gulf of Anadyr. Change is coming for the southeast Bering Sea as a couple of storms this week to bring periods of south winds. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

@AlaskaWx @Climatologist49 @ZLabe Interesting. Are there known currents or other marine conditions that explain the East/West assymetry? Or something with winds throughout the freezing season?

@lavergnetho @Climatologist49 @ZLabe Not marine, atmospheric. Same big persistent high aloft centered near the dateline keep north winds and way below normal temperatures over the eastern Bering Sea and Alaska kept frequent storms and south winds over the west Bering and Sea of Okhotsk.
