The blue tits must be creating a very cosy nest in the new nest box. I thought they’d finished but no, more moss going in today. Every now and then one of the pair sticks their head out and spits out a bit of material that obviously didn’t pass the quality control test.

The box is outside the kitchen window so we can watch all the activity while doing the washing up.

@helenclayton That is a very nice design. I particularly like the (half?) log front.
@Devonkiwi it was a flat piece of firewood. Presumably the centre of the tree it came from was hollow when cut down. Husband built the box around it using his offcuts.
@helenclayton Much kudos to husband!
@Devonkiwi it was my Christmas present 😊

@helenclayton

I really enjoy seeing how particular birds are about what passes muster for their nests.

@Sharonbw yes! Lots of different birds took moss and lichen from our cherry tree. The great tits are particularly fond of the sheep’s wool I put out and they tease out the fibres they want and those they don’t, though they all look the same to me!
@helenclayton @Sharonbw I’m going to fill the willow feeder with wool today and a bit of the coco fiber from last years planters. Someone took a string I put out yesterday so it must be time.
@IcooIey @Sharonbw oh I just suggested this before seeing your post 😂
@helenclayton this is so nice. Great pleasure in watching their domestic arrangements.
@IcooIey if you are taking down your feeders you could try putting nesting material in the willow one. I have sheep’s wool in one of mine and the little birds love pulling it out.
@helenclayton I saw you did this a while ago! Will see if I can get around to it today.
@helenclayton Images like that should be hidden behind a content warning!
@helenclayton so.. did you win the war with the squirrel(s) over the bird feeder? enquiring minds want to know
@nifta I did! Strangely the squirrels don’t bother with any of the bird feeders now, even the ones that weren’t squirrel-proofed. Whether this year’s batch will have a go I don’t know.
@helenclayton wow, good on you. tho i kinda miss the increasingly desperate updates “from the front” 😂
@nifta 😂 it was strange how they stopped, just gave up. Maybe realised there was enough natural food 🤷‍♀️. We still have squirrels though not as many I don’t think. One was running around with the baby (wild) rabbit earlier today.
