The Irish Government have launched a consultation with the public about their Digital Wallet with 10 questions.
This is not exclusively a tool for age verification and could be a critical tool in everyday life. I think absolutely everyone in Ireland should engage in it.

Concerned about privacy?
Concerned about what happens if your phone breaks?
Concerned about forcing people to have a Google or Apple account to access Government services?
Voice it all.

Welcome to the Government Digital Wallet

We understand that big life events such as having a baby or the death of a loved one can be very busy and emotionally demanding.

Government of Ireland

There is a question about trust and understanding. We need details of scenarios that are not ideal.

What happens if your phone breaks or is lost? Are documents lost forever? What does a recovery process look like?

What happens if your phone is stolen?

If a bad actor is trying to acquire a victim’s digital wallet for identify theft, what safeguards stop them from doing so? Does this make phishing targets more valuable?

[1/2]

Can a parent/guardian store the digital documents of a child? Can multiple parents/guardians store the details of a single child?

Can I share my documents with a person (face to face) without presenting my phone unlocked? I do not want to hand over my unlocked phone to a nightclub bouncer, for example.

How can I migrate from my old phone to my new phone?

Does the app require an internet connection to work? What happens if I am offline for a long time?

Some items that are important to me and I will list as concerns, that might inspire ye:

Open source and transparency is essential

The wallet should be accessible by users of GraphineOS and other android forks

Direct distribution of the app would be a welcome option and not exclusively Google Play dependent.

Privacy concerns relating to who can see who I share my details with.

@coraven @otfrom sounds like Ireland and Germany are making the same mistakes, and just a few weeks after the EU had this great idea for digital sovereignty so users didn't have to rely on USA-jurisdiction companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft 🤦

@craignicol @otfrom
Possibly.

I have been watching that thread and I am disappointed that Germany is effectively going to exclude GraphineOS, Iodé, /e/, LineageOS and other degoogled phones.

As far as I know, Ireland has not shown their code so their is a chance that we will not.
I have email correspondce from the Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation back in September indicating that they may be open to doing using a more open standard.

@coraven @otfrom I hope they do. If they can show it can be done, it'll put pressure on other governments too.

@craignicol @otfrom
Specifically I asked the Minister about if would they require Google's Attestation on Android and if the app would be exclusive to Google Play and Apple App Store and therefore users be subject to their T&Cs.

Attestation - they recognised that Google Play is not mandated and open security standard were recommended.

Stores - 3rd party app store and direct distribution were not ruled out and were being considered.

Their position could change, but the consultation is vital.

@craignicol @coraven @otfrom Austria already has their wallet/eIDAS implemented since quite a while, and here the only way to get it onto a de-googled smartphone is afaik via the Aurora store. the alternative for users who dont want to use biometry is to use a FIDO key:

@coraven

Have registered my interest.

@coraven I thought it was clear from the EU mandate that use of the digital wallet cannot be made mandatory, that there must remain offline alternatives. So nobody is forced to have an Apple or Google account to access public services. Of course having to have an Apple or Google account to access public services with the digital wallet is bad enough. And how well that requirement in general stands up to reality is an open question.

@willegible you are correct that it will not be 'mandatory'.
But you can bet that the alternatives for government services will be frustrating, slow and underresourced. I feel that people will be pressured into adopting it - similar to the myGovID.

And when this tool is rolled out for the use of age verification on online platforms, the alternative procedures available on that platform may not be agreeable (AI facescan or pictures of your passport).

@coraven

System requirements would be useful.

Yesterday I read somewhere that it needs iPhone 8 and upwards.

My 2nd hand phone is too old.

Will they supply phones for this?
