One day rabbit saw wolf trying to plant a garden. Rabbit immediately saw a chance for mischief and came up to him to ask what he was doing. "Planting onions" was wolf's reply and rabbit said he would help him and share in the crop.

They worked it all summer and got along with each other, rabbit dug with his paws while wolf came behind carrying the onions and tamped them down. Wolf pulled weeds and rabbit carried away those that didn't look good enough to eat. After a time of growing they were looking at the plants and rabbit said "look at the pretty sprouts" "I like that!" Barked wolf. Next time, in the rain and heat, rabbit and wolf were sitting by their garden and rabbit said
"the tops! Look how green and thick, healthy they are!" And wolf thought about it and said "they are making a pretty sight too!" And laughed in that panting heavy breathing laugh of his. After days of hot sun, warm nights and showers, rabbit hollered at wolf and said "the onions are ready! Which part do you want?" And wolf was confused, because he wasn't a farmer and never tried to grow anything before. "I said, which half of the onion do you want?" Asked rabbit. "Oh. Well." Said wolf
thinking hard. He finally whined "I just don't know" rabbit patted him on the shoulder consolingly and said "tell you what, I'll be generous with you and take the bottoms and you can have the whole rest of the tops" "Oh yes!" Barked wolf excited, "that sounds just fine!" And so it was that wolf got a whole collection of the tops while rabbit hacked off every fat bulb from them. Wolf took his harvest home and rabbit did his. "Tomorrow we meet and trade our plantings" said rabbit.
And so they did meet and took them to market where the other animals were doing trade. Rabbit carried his basket up and down and called out "onions! I got fresh tasty onions for trade!" And did a fine business. Wolf was right behind him almost singing a howl "tops! Fresh cut tops! Fresh from the ground!" Everybody came to see and laughed at wolf thinking it was a fine joke. The next spring, rabbit came by and was delighted to see wolf trying farming again.
Rabbit asked if he was planting onions again. "No!" Barked wolf, angrily "I'm planting corn!" Rabbit thumped his leg and hopped"I know all about corn, let's go partners and I'll help you!" "I'm on to your tricks" snarled wolf. "You're not getting me again!" Rabbit again patted his shoulder consolingly "you're right, that was mean. This time, I'll take the tops and you have the entire bottoms" wolf thought that was an excellent idea and since he still didn't know anything about farming,
graciously took rabbit's help and worked with rabbit the whole summer planting and growing the corn. The weather was good and hot again with rain. And the corn came in and the morning glories came up in the corn, like they always will. And when it was ready, rabbit honored his deal with wolf and took all the tops and wolf took the bottom. They again went home and agreed to meet at market and do trade. Wolf was excited because he remembered how well rabbit did with the bottoms of
last years harvest and was delighted he finally got one on the trickster. The next day at Market, rabbit walked up and down with his big basket hollering "Corn! Good sweet corn for trade!" With wolf behind him barking "bottoms! I got the bottoms now! Good corn bottoms!" And again all the animals traded with rabbit and laughed at wolf thinking he was making the same joke as last harvest.
Wolf watched rabbit make off with an overflowing basket of vegetables, honey, trinkets and then went home and kicked up the dirt in his garden and vowed to never be a farmer again and to try and eat Rabbit every chance he got.
