ā€œThe Thingā€ was a Soviet listening device invented by Leon Theremin (inventor of the electronic instrument bearing his name) that hung undetected in the US Ambassador to the USSR’s residential study in Moscow for 7 years. One of the first ā€œpassiveā€ bugs, it’s considered a predecessor of RFID tech.

@Movie2468 they probably did test it but because it was passive there’d be nothing to detect unless it was actively being ā€œilluminatedā€ by an external radio signal at the time.
