Does anyone know if there are any #eInk-based phones with unlocked bootloaders you could install something like #LineageOS on?

That would be a crazy cool device to have, but I wouldn't be willing to put up with the typical #Android shenanigans.

@rl_dane Not quite perfect, but maybe: https://www.reddit.com/r/hisenseA9/comments/1diqvv6/flash_a_hisense_a9_with_a_custom_rom/

Best after I could find after a quick poke around but I'm sure other people will know more than I

@daniel

Looks like the newer hardware revisions have issues, sadly

@rl_dane

Mudita uses its own google-free version of AOSP optimized for e-ink display...

Mudita Kompakt, a minimalist E Ink® phone.

Mudita Kompakt is a minimalist phone designed for mindful living. Featuring an E Ink screen, long battery life, and distraction-free tools, this E Ink phone helps you stay focused and unplug with ease.

@freezr

Ooo, I didn't know that!
Does it have MicroG, or just totally ungoogled?

@rl_dane

Not sure, the FAQ knows better than me...

@rl_dane

Does Mudita Kompakt support third-party apps?

While Mudita Kompakt does not include an app store, you can sideload third-party Android apps using our Mudita Center desktop application. However, apps not optimized for the E Ink screen or requiring Google Services may perform inconsistently. Mudita does not guarantee the compatibility of any third-party apps.

@freezr

Ah, better for something like a secondary device then.

Might be neat to play around with.

@rl_dane

I’ve seen eink phones but they’re insanely expensive.

No idea about the bootloader things.

@amin @rl_dane I've been, eyeing the Boox Palma 2 Pro for a while now and thinking the same thing. $400 is a lot of money.

@joe @amin

The Mudita Kompakt seems a wee but more affordable (by $100, IIRC).

Also, Onyx/Boox has a bad history with GPL violations, although at this point that may well be proverbial fleas on the Urukhai's back of our current dystopia.
