over 25 years of being sick of hearing about harry fucking potter
I will never let the Animorphs vs Harry Potter playground beef die. these are the authors of Animorphs btw. we won. take that, gradeschoolers in 1998
I seem to have found all the trans furry people of fedi 👋
@germ ok but that is like half the community
@repeattofade and where were they while I was throwing down with Harry Potter fans at the monkey bars is what I want to know
@germ @repeattofade they were off building the fediverse, apparently?
@afeinman @repeattofade and I am grateful for that 🙏
@germ The whole third book where Tobias has to come to terms with being trapped in a hawk's body, afraid to lose himself in the Hawk Brain instincts, is more meaningful to me than ANY of the crap in the fucking wizard books.
@germ Also Tobias in general reads trans as fuck!
@DotMaetrix The series as a whole is just so much more valuable with what it had to say about war and the concept of child soldiers
@DotMaetrix @germ I've known multiple trans men who named themselves after Tobias from Animorphs
@DotMaetrix @germ was asked by another trans person who my favorite animorphs characters were. i said tobias and rachel. they replied “oh, the trans-coded one and the lesbian-coded one, no surprises.”
@germ KA Applegate is an incredible human and also openly and proudly not just supports trans people in the abstract but also her trans daughter in specific.
@germ you. you made a typo in the alt text.
@etherealsasha the way I wanted to crawl into a hole and DIE when I noticed 😭 I fixed it in an edit but apparently edited alt text doesn't always federate once your instance has already seen it so guess I'm doomed 🙇

@germ not to mention that HP teaches kids that cops are cool; while animorphs teaches kids ACAB.

in general animorphs is just hella suspicious of authority and very pro-autonomy. meanwhile HP is like “well maybe slavery is good.”

@Jaytee @germ Worse than simply being fine, they take the "It's fine, they're cool with it" approach to slaves.

Ah yes, the entire race of people who are just rarin to do degrading menial work enduring constant abuse for no monetary gain.

Nothing hideous about that idea, nope. (I am being sarcastic, of course, it's really really racist)

@Jaytee @germ actually they like being slaves, why are you trying to take that away from them

@germ

I read that entire book series from start to finish.
Thank you scholastic book fairs.

@germ I was a bit young for Anamorphs, but while I enjoyed Harry Potter growing up, I also enjoyed Warrior Cats, Ranger's Apprentice, Hunger Games, Maze runner, and a whole bunch of other YA novels that, tbh, varied in quality. But now that I'm an adult, the only one of those that really seems to still be talked about much is Harry Potter, and it probably also has both the worst message and the worst author.

@germ We didn’t have that beef on any of my playgrounds but I came from where HP was the only children’s book series a lot of parents had heard of and they thought letting kids read it would be exposing them to devilish, evil influence.

BOY DID I NEVER EXPECT THEM TO TURN OUT TO BE CORRECT, if only for all the wrong reasons.
