I have an absolutely scalding take that the cultural schism between the largely pluralistic, overwhelmingly progressive Jewish Diaspora and largely conservative, reactionary Israeli Jewish population is so great that we're not even really practicing the same religious or cultural tradition anymore,
and much of the Diaspora either doesn't realize it or is in outright denial because that would mean losing what they see as a potential safe haven, whilst the Israeli right is already well aware of it and that's why they mock the Diaspora and cozy up to Christian Nationalists instead.
But I don't think we're ready for that conversation, much as I think we really need to have it, like, NOW.

@theleftistlawyer that convo needs to happen ASAP cuz you nailed it.

it’s why Mamdani baffles the fascists. they thought !Jews, so he could never get elected. but NYC is not only home to the largest Satmar community in the world. they aren’t some inconsequential sect. they, in many ways, define orthodox judaism in our city.

well into the 1990s, the word zionism wasn't even mainstream, treated as an extremist view. the murder of Rabbin & Netanyahu cozying to fascists changed that.

@theleftistlawyer the Zionists are cozying up with antisemites and they both hate the Jewish diaspora

@burnoutqueen @theleftistlawyer

And they're quite eager to tell anybody who's not on board with all this that they're "not a REAL Jew".

Hideous cultural schism that's ripping friendships and families apart.

@violetmadder @burnoutqueen @theleftistlawyer There is one state in the Middle East that has gone completely rogue and fascist and is in constant military aggression against its neighbors, its name starts with an i and it’s not Iran and it’s not Iraq.
@violetmadder @burnoutqueen @theleftistlawyer i remember a time when it wasn't normal here in nyc to claim you were a zionist or supported zionists ―even less the fuckery of christian zionism― because it was considered a reactionary, even an extremist and theocratic view of judaism. the shift has happened in my lifetime and it’s been mindboggling because, it couldn’t happen without a fascist revival. they go hand-in-hand.

@blogdiva @burnoutqueen @theleftistlawyer

YES.

All the big money anywhere is pumping up fascism everywhere, because they NEED IT to protect themselves from an increasingly frustrated rabble. Any nation, political or cultural or ethnic group has its fascist fringe getting amplified with direct contributitons and algorithmic boosting.

@theleftistlawyer hm, at least in here in South FL I think there's more than enough cross migration between Israel and the US that there isn't much separation but maybe that's unique? also, they're becoming very right wing, though there's oddities about that, for example, Jared Moskowitz is more or less a Likud member politically but here he runs in the Dems, even thoguh he's very right wing for the US, he's a former DeSantis appointee and often supports Trump in Congress.

@cam @theleftistlawyer

A lot of more conservative New Yorkers moved to Florida (accelerated when COVID lockdown started and I don't think it reversed much,) which skews things there

@gbargoud @theleftistlawyer nah i grew up here, so since the 90s the israel connection is just as strong as the ny connection, but i don't have much of an insider's look anymore, but the JVP folks I know basically don't go anymore.
@theleftistlawyer Sadly, it is the wrong one that is wagging the dog
@theleftistlawyer I’m no kind of Jewish so I have no informed opinion. But I’ve known some Jewish folks well and I’ve been to Israel a couple times and spent time with Israelis. This feels really insightful to me and aligns with a lot of what I have observed.
