Hi welcome to mastodon a few things and Tbh they are quite important, if you want to know about any hashtags or upcoming things with mastodon please follow @FediTips they have super important advice that covers everything! Like what servers to join for art and how small servers work and hashtags for specific topics.
Mastodon is usually built on quiet and small communities! So definitely search around and you will find which group you want to belong to and keep in mind you are the algorithm, every boost you do shows it to the people that follow you! So boost wisely and try to add alt-text to any images! They are there so people can access mastodon no matter what.
Other than that I wish you luck! But there are many of us here we just like to be in our own corners.
