Erin Jonaitis@luckytran The slide has been so sad to watch. Their director resigned in protest last spring, if memory serves, and they've got a nonscientist interim now. I seem to remember a surprise relocation also, and some terrible alterations to peer review?
I was there for a brief fellowship in 2008/9 and was just so impressed by everything about the place -- the program officers and other staff I met were curious, dedicated, collegial people who wanted to make their fields better.

Non-capital-equipment research grants down almost 60% from 2025. Combined discretionary funding down 55%. Overall funding down 43% (after a brand new $900m line item for an Antarctic research vessel).
And this isn't the actual final funding. This is the *ask*.

levampyre@luckytran It is still very bewildering to read the term "woke" and anti-woke phrasing in a document like this. But I guess that's the times we're living in now. (Not that I want to sit back and accept that, though.)

I know a little bit of what's happening internally through some aquaintences. The PI's and staff are against everything that's happening and are genuinly great people, but the organisation has already been gutted a lot. OMB has already withheld funding (illegally) previously, so it's either comply with the adminstration, or die completely, and they're trying salvage what they still can. NSF hasn't been compromised, just forced by the admnistration, and it's powerless to do anything.
