Minnesota Retro Tech Club Free Table Gets:

i've been wanting a smol 8088 system for testing software compatibility and performance and this Toshiba T1000 is cool as hell

but they're all notorious basket cases by now and need recapping and repair

it has the EMS CARD!

indeed the battery, (a local replacement from 1992?) initially looked clean but its corroded ALL THE WAY UP THE WIRES and is starting to eat the board

cleaned it up best i could without stripping the board, you can run it off 5v on the battery connector if the DC/DC isn't shot but it is very much not functional right now

#retrocomputing #MSDOS

also snagged a Toshiba T4800CT

a pretty badass 486DX4/75 system with local bus video and WSS audio??

no soundblaster or FM chip so not an ideal DOS gaming system but i've seen few 486 laptops with audio at all

i really want to get this running

it just flashes a P41 error which is a main 12v bus undervolt

looks like its gonna be another power supply repair 🫡

welp lets dismantle it and get to any battery bombs lurking in there

there's one right there in the hinge, doesn't seem to have leaked

there it is, the 486DX4 and the chip (not a set unless you count the SuperIO)

well there's the motherboard, WD90C24A and a bunch of RAM on the backside, sound card and connectors are on another board

this thing has many layers, still a button cell in there to get to, power supply board not lookin' obviously bad

moar later i gotta get ready for Ground Zero tonight 💃

@Seg oh yeah this line of toshibas is very vertical inside

@Seg thank you for discovering the NIMH battery location 🙏 looking forward to seeing where the clock battery is hidden away

i have an identical 4800CT that my mother bought in 1996ish, and it is long overdue for battery replacement

so there is an interesting addendum to the WSS/SB issue: it *does* support SBFM in dos! there is a TSR from the original installer called WSSXLAT.EXE that provides SB support. (fwiw, it's SB via emulation and not native obvs)

lemme know if you need the tsr

@Seg Toshiba used to make some hecking good laptops...
@Seg I hope yours isn't as badly corroded as my T1200 :< I basically lost most of the motherboard, including super important parts, so I accepted I'll only get to keep the screen and the keyboard

@Seg You know it's an old battery when it came from the 15th century. :-)

(Yeah, I realise it's the 14th week of 1992.)
