As we suspected

Thiazide induced hyponatremia is more seen in older women

JNO analysis from Sweden https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2847235

@hswapnil I only use it as an adjunct short term diuretic, and often stop it in those who use it for hypertension.
The age:sex interaction is interesting, what could be the cause?

@loaddependent the clinical observations is that this is due to low protein diet (eg tea and toast) - low solute + reduced renal diluting ability = hyponatremia

But there’s genetics too https://www.nephjc.com/news/thiazide which hasn’t reported age/sex interactions

Thiazide induced hyponatremia, a detailed phenotypic and genotypic analysis — NephJC

Thiazide induced hyponatremia occurs in about 10% of people. Is there a genetic link? Does that genetic link give clues to the mechanism of thiazide induced hyponatremia? Find out in the next exciting edition of #NephJC
