TIL that #AbeBooks is owned by #Amazon, FFS!

@ItsThatDeafGuy

eBay is my go-to for nearly everything, including used books.

Some real bookstores also carry used books - Powell's in Portland, Third Place Books in Seattle - you might try ordering from them.

@CaseyL thank you, although I'm in England.

@ItsThatDeafGuy

...oh. Oh, wait! I ordered something from Waterstones, back in '22. They're based in the UK, and have cheap books:

@CaseyL yes, thank you, Waterstones is a renowned high street chain here in the UK.

@ItsThatDeafGuy

Well, if you want to avoid Amazon and Amazon-adjacent businesses...

@CaseyL I'm after second hand books, buying new books isn't always financially viable for some people, but thank you.

@ItsThatDeafGuy

Yes, ABE Books is Amazon.

Alibris is good, I'm not sure why they get mentioned so rarely.

@billyjoebowers
I actually ordered a book from there today for the first time, thanks to your recommendation! Perfect timing.

@ItsThatDeafGuy

I was SO annoyed when I discovered that!

I recommend World of Books for used books - they have their own website - I have bought quite a few books from them now.

For new books there is https://uk.bookshop.org/ who also support local bookshops.

@PetraPhoenix @ItsThatDeafGuy i think bookshop.org is also in the US...
@ItsThatDeafGuy
I found that out the hard way, too, when I thought I’d been boycotting Amazon for years. Moved onto ThriftBooks and Better World Books.
@ItsThatDeafGuy interesting. There is a book on Amazon sold at £160 that I got from Abe for £3.20. I guess the portal is acting as an agent and just collecting a commission.
@ItsThatDeafGuy biblioquest is reasonable for secondhand. A lot of smaller publishers will also let you order direct from them.
@ItsThatDeafGuy yeah. I used to shop there a lot until they got bought out.
@ItsThatDeafGuy yeah... Bookfinder too.
