After watching the wonderful @mac84tv video on the MIMMS iNSPIRE exhibit, I noticed this early Macintosh ii prototype.

I have to admit I got *very* excited, as this is only the second Macintosh ii prototype I've seen. (YACCintosh and the Big Mac technically don't count, as they're a different architecture)

(Thanks to Mac84 for sending me a few more photos of the exhibit!)

@DosFox @mac84tv Heck, doing that lot on proto board must have been a nightmare - especially the PGAs! I'd have assumed they would have gone to basic PCB for this stuff.

@penguin42 possibly due to costs, you wouldn't want to commit to a costly PCB without proving it works!

I also have a feeling this was the last time they actually did this.

The IIx was almost certainly a hack and slash of the original II board. Same with the IIcx!

@DosFox I wasn't thinking of an expensive professional PCB; more the UV exposed stuff, that's easy for single sided (and I suspect double?)

@penguin42 at least with the original Macintosh design, they started with a similar Veroboard design and then brought in someone else to do the layout of the first Macintosh board:

"Later in 1981 we brought Colette Askeland over from the Apple-II/III division to lay out a Mac PCB"

So maybe they wanted to build Veroboard prototypes first before they started bothering other people for PCB layouts 😅
