This morning I meet with my unemployment minder, the person who decides if I’m doing enough to get the money I’ve paid into the system.

This isn’t built for people with #ADHD who may hyperfocus for a week, apply for four jobs, rebuild their portfolios etc — and then need a week to let their brain squirrels run elsewhere to recharge.

Oh, joy. I was told that saying I was a caregiver for my chronically ill girlfriend could mean that I wasn't available for work or to look for work.

Seriously? I cared for her the whole time I had a damn job.

Fuck. This. #Ableist. System.

@colorblindcowboy Yeah, that's awful. Seems like mentioning this is a useful filter for places where you don't want to work.
@stefan This is the unemployment agency though. You have to answer whether or not you were technically available to work.

@colorblindcowboy Oh yeah, I got that, sorry about the confusing wording! I meant, for when you actually interview for a role.

But either way, more of a thought let out loud, rather than an actual advice! However you go about this, good luck!

@stefan No, I’ve def thought about that. If I have to explain why we moved to Nowhere, Washington, I’ll say “family reasons.”
@colorblindcowboy Liking out of solidarity. The news cycle has really worn me down this afternoon. We are chronically lacking in empathy in this culture.

@colorblindcowboy because society still treats it as a personal failing, not a disability.

Lotta folks genuinely cannot believe an inability to make a different “choice”. Because to them it is a choice.

@loops Yeah. It’s really true. It’s not until people have experienced it on either side.
@colorblindcowboy I feel like we could just believe each other 😅
@loops You’d think, but…
