The signup workflow for my Matrix instance is giving even my more technically adept friends issues. I shouldn’t have to also host a wiki for people that work with technology to be able to use my instance.

That and the fact that Matrix was born out of the IDF have just soured me on the whole thing.

I’m probably going to scrap it and give Fluxer a try next.

@bflipp its pretty new, just let it thaw and it'll get easier over the years

@jarinks

What?

@bflipp Every new piece of tech is extremely hard to use for non-techy people until it develops a bit more so the devs consider UI and UX

Right now, the devs are improving security, fixing bugs, etc but when all thats done, UI and UX changes will be the priorities

@jarinks

If you’re talking about Matrix it’s been around in some form since 2014. That’s not new.

I’m going into Fluxer with the knowledge that the platform is still being iterated on. But as long as I can reliably host the basics of text and audio chat with easier signups I’ll be happy with it.

@bflipp its being adopted mainstream now. Thats a big change for any dev and they're likely overwhelmed with users

@jarinks

Why on earth do you care what services I choose to host?

I've been building software since the late 1990s. I don't need anyone on Mastodon to explain how things work to me.

Matrix doesn't meet the standards for usability with the users I'm trying to off-board from Discord. End of story. I'm not paying money for hosting this every month to have nobody use it.

@jarinks

Keep in mind, the people I've invited for testing the instance work with tech every day in some capacity. They aren't software engineers, but they are what I consider literate.

If they are having even an ounce of trouble the several thousand users from the Discord I run that I'm pitching a migration to will just be a gigantic headache for me and my admins to manage.
