My landlady also said that the gate needs to be locked at night, but they do not lock it for a full 18 hours on the winter solstice and only 6 hours on the summer solstice (or a bit less if taking the astronomical twilight into the account). They lock the gate just before they go to sleep. I lock the gate if there is not enough light to read outside when I arrive (nautical twilight).
