Very eager to hear people’s thoughts on this video. I think he explains the issues with the left’s current rhetoric surrounding AI very well https://youtu.be/Z75hlhgchQ4?si=7IeYT_-864BrrpaU
The Left Has An AI Problem

YouTube

@taylorlorenz He makes one mistake that undermines his point massively. He wants to treat "AI" as "normal" technology (which one can argue) but conflates that with treating it as "neutral" technology, which it is not.

(There is the fundamental issue that "AI" is not "a technology" but that level of detailed argument is hard to make these days.)

In a way it's just the "there is no alternative" framing from a different side. I don't find it to be very convincing.

@tante @taylorlorenz I disagree. I believe that technology is neutral. It is an amplifier of work (human labor or even mechanics or physics) and therefore ownership or control of technology like AI is important in the same way that ownership and control of factories was. That said, my favorite thing about this video was the cool graffiti covered space he decided to record half of it from.
@taylorlorenz FFS, what garbage. LLMs are not here to stay. They won't even survive the year.

@taylorlorenz have you read "Weapons of Math Destruction"?

I find that a good critique

Neither left nor right

@taylorlorenz basic sentiment is good, but seizing the means of production doesn't ensure success. It's also a pipe dream. Many industrial services like power and water that should be public goods are privatized. And even after bloody revolution to acquire them, the public will insist on more usage, furthering damaging externalities to the environment.
@taylorlorenz I can't watch 42 minutes of the guy rambling, but "AI is here to stay" in the same way as blockchains and NFTs still exist.
@taylorlorenz He drank too much of the Kool-Aid. Way too much. In fact, he IS the Kool-Aid.
@taylorlorenz I think it was really good. The current rhetoric from the left is not convincing, using it is like being on a tiny island with the sea coming in and no one wants to join you on that island.
Going back to basics about who gets to own the means of production and what a transformed society can look like is a much better idea and organising tool - one needs to be implemented sooner rather than later.
@taylorlorenz
fell asleep - but AI won't change a whole lot - only the movie industry... in 10 years an AI data center will fit in n the palm of your hand... it's all going to be ok
@micky @taylorlorenz
democratize the movie industry - that's a good thing - local art - local actors - local stories
@micky @micky @taylorlorenz
why you have become a lightning rod for the environmentalists - is quite unfair - their windmills & solar panels are atrocious for the environment - nuclear fusion can't come soon enough - part of our job is redirecting people's energy to future technology which elevates their concerns - like Vanilla Ice
