This is my second "holy shit" of the day.
Apparently #LinkedIn if silently collecting data on every extension you use every time you visit the site. Which it then uploads, with your identity attached to it.
This is absolutely horrifying. Literally, people should go to jail over this.

LinkedIn Is Illegally Searching Your Computer

Microsoft is running one of the largest corporate espionage operations in modern history. Every time any of LinkedIn’s one billion users visits linkedin.com, hidden code searches their computer for installed software, collects the results, and transmits them to LinkedIn’s servers and to third-party companies including an American-Israeli cybersecurity firm. The user is never asked. Never told. LinkedIn’s privacy policy does not mention it. Because LinkedIn knows each user’s real name, employer, and job title, it is not searching anonymous visitors. It is searching identified people at identified companies. Millions of companies. Every day. All over the world.

@jik It does not help that there is no credible alternative to LinkedIn.
@plwt LinkedIn is, itself, not credible.
@plwt @jik for what? Even my small town has two or three tech focused social networks. with in person events.
@falken @jik In my experience, recruiters (both internal and agencies) are looking for LI profiles as that provides a common CV format.
@plwt
Not using it is a credible choice.

@jik I only go to linked in to confirm/get info for #LegalTranscription. Will it do this if not logged in?
@Axomamma I don't know what you mean by "confirm/get info for Legal Transcription".
@jik I google people, look at their linked to confirm their name, employer - that kind of thing. I like my transcripts accurate!

@jik And that is why ...

1. I have never put my work history in.
2. They still haven't figured out that I didn't use my real name (did the same with FaceBook).

And yeah ... this is Fuck All illegal.

@jik this is insane. I had no idea about it! It seems it’s for Chrome extensions only, though?

More reasons to ditch all Google-related products.

@Meznor Yes, the data collection only happens on Chromium-based browsers, i.e., browsers that can run Chrome extensions from the Chrome web store.
@jik @Meznor Feeling disgusted by this egregious behavior yet relieved I refused to use Chrome all these years.
@doctorlaura @jik YES! I only fully de-googled a couple years ago and I’m so glad I did. I’m glad I was historically a Firefox user (and didn’t use extensions except adblockers). Now it’s duckduckgo all the way.
