Not the best timing due to the RAMpocalypse, but there are leaner distros like Lubuntu available if you need them.

Along with Lubuntu, it's worth mentioning legacy Ubuntu images remain available and those already installed on LTS versions have potentially many years (up to 9 or more) still supported on whatever they version they installed.

Memory is also upgradeable on many old machines that with a small hardware investment can become great Linux hosts.
