In the age of digital film, I'm seeing film grain still being used, now as a post production digital effect. Do viewers know what film grain refers to? Does it refer to anything at all? Has it become an absolute metaphor? So many questions!
@molily film grain, along with 24fps, are hallmarks of “film”, regardless of the technical need. It’s just become a way to evoke a feeling.
Incidently, a lot of the film grain you’re seeing is applied client-side, to reduce the network transfer costs: https://netflixtechblog.com/av1-scale-film-grain-synthesis-the-awakening-ee09cfdff40b
