The internet is broken. But was it ever whole?

Error 417 Expectation Failed invites artists, curators, and collectives to reject the longing for a mythic "old internet" and confront #netNostalgia head-on.

We don't need to resurrect a past that never existed. We need to ask: what protocols, networks, archives, and shared conditions can build the internet we actually want?

Open call. Global.

Open Call — Error 406 [Netstalgia] Not Acceptable

Our open call for projects Error 406 [Netstalgia] Not Acceptable focuses on the notion of netstalgia: a selective and idealized remembering of earlier phases of the internet. We are looking for projects that reject the longing for a mythic “old internet” and confront the politics of netstalgia head-on.

Error 417 Expectation Failed

@dyne Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

  • Its now very difficult for independent services to remain online without getting DDoS'd by "legitimate" and very high-powered AI data centers.

  • Search engines have gotten much worse (I won't explain.. open your eyes).

  • Social media has shifted to a fascist project, and fedi hasn't seen growth in years.

  • Web browsers are being shut out of essential services from banking to operating a laundromat device; you must run the Apple-Google-approved malware app on your personal device. (i.e. open protocols are no longer honored; proprietary code is required).

  • Proliferation of proprietary IoTs, most of them bearing mics and other surveillance kit.

  • AI being forced on everyone in every situation as a pretext to supercharge the exfiltration of private data to corporate data centers.

Failure to recognize worsening conditions is one thing; insisting people fall in line with that failure is worse.

@tasket Not sure i catch your drift, if you saying error 417 are insisting people fall in line, i urge you to read the call.

This is about the 3rd path you forgot to enumerate: to explore, dream up and reclaim protocols, networks, archives, and shared conditions that can build the internet we actually want!
