Google is killing the web. - Lemmy

Lemmy

Why is this in c/degoogle? This guy couldn’t get off without his AI girlfriend stepping on him with google branded knee-high stilettos.

Google isn’t just making agents more efficient, there’s a bigger vision to build a system where websites are disassembled into its component parts, and reassembled by AI systems (Google and others) to best serve each individual user.

How long until this does not only “reassemble” pages, but also changes their content? Prescription medicine dosage got skewed because the agent hallucinated (5mg, 50mg, 500mg - doesn’t matter, right?). Information on vaccines shifted to full-on anti-vaxx conspiracy bullshit because it was “what the user was actually looking for” and “research shows it improves user experience”. References to the Epstein files got redacted by AI because it was trained to censor results provide politically neutral information.

Such good points. This seems incredibly dangerous.

provide politically neutral information

i’ve had to tell chatgpt/copilot several times in the past few weeks to stop doing this and yesterday it got jarring because i asked both it and deepseek the same thing and the results were miles apart from each other.

Just goes to show that chatbots are not search engines, and the more search engines lean into chatbots, the more pressing this problem will become.

it would be easier it were a google search, but it was question about the epsteins winning the lottery twice and chatgpt pushed back saying that there was no proof of that in the epstein files.

which is true of the epstein files themselves, but other confirmed documentation (ie the court case that sent gishlaine maxwell to prison) shows that it happens and makes it feel like chatgpt is running the same sort of distraction that the mainstream media does.

The internet is already dead, brah. We are the bacteria that continue to live on in the corpse while it decomposes.

it’s still thriving; you just need to stay away from centralized instances of it.

i’ve learned that if it has everything you want, it’s because profit seeking made sure it of it.

Call me naive, but from where I’m sitting the old web we all love is not only still there but getting better every day with inventions like ActivityPub and the fediverse. The Google feature listed in this article is stupid but it only affects Google users.

Google and Meta and Reddit etc, have built their own walled gardens garbage dumps, but if you look at what’s left when you remove their worthless fluff, all of the good bits are still there and getting better. Just because the Good Web doesn’t move at the breakneck pace of silicon valley VC-funded startups doesn’t mean it’s not improving every day.

fully agreed, people just assume it’s dead because a site doesn’t offer a full spread of bread and circuses; now it’s takes minor effort again like it used to back in 1995.
