I can't believe how bad the current crop of #macOS #Mastodon clients is. I tried @whalebird , @TheDesk , @IceCubesApp (which is OK on #iOS), @mastonaut , @sengi_app , @fedistar . They're all either seriously buggy, too limited in functionality or the #UI is a disaster. Anyone using a multi-account macOS Mastodon client they're really happy with? Prefer free but kinda open to paid at this point.
@drewtowler I’ve been very satisfied with @MonaApp although I use it 99⁓⁓⁄₁₀₀ of the time on iOS, despite having a license for the macOS version. So just pointing that out as one to check out since it’s not mentioned in your list. HTH
@vaughnsc @MonaApp What's the licensing deal with Mona? I can't find any clear info about pricing or if there's a free version.

@drewtowler @MonaApp Had to dig a bit, I have the ā€˜Classic’ Mona version 6.9 (there is now a separate Mona 7) I paid $20 for a lifetime cross-platform license back in 2023; seems that same license has risen to $29 now (maybe they use free-range, grass-fed eggs in the code, artisanally basted with Brent crude?). This I sussed out by expanding ā€˜In App purchases’ in the store. Oddly enough there used to be single platform options for 9 bucks but I don’t see them. Mona 7 Ultra tier is even pricier but I don’t see any major value-added for my use case. I just like a solid and straightforward client.

There is a ā€˜free tier’ but you’re basically ’read only’; you can’t even favorite a toot IIRC. So I did the 14 day trial and Mona ticked the boxes for me. I haven’t regretted it, but this 50% hike would give me pause.

(Anecdotally, Tweetbot was my go to for the birdsite but at the time, I felt the swipe UI in Ivory was gimmicky and I found myself constantly swiping the wrong direction, or ā€˜overshooting’)

@vaughnsc @drewtowler In the free version of Mona 7, you can reply, repost, favorite etc. without limitations. For more info, check this post: https://mastodon.social/@MonaApp/115555724255071879
@jonny_kuang @vaughnsc I installed Mona, was presented with an upsell to an "Ultra" subscription in order to get multiple accounts or even change the theme colour, but no mention of "Pro Max" at all within the UI. Very confusing.

@drewtowler Yeah there are *two* Mona apps available (at least for iOS: ā€˜Classic’ (Mona up to v6.9) and Mona 7; sounds like you installed the latter. Pro Max tiers are in Mona Classic.

PS @jonny_kuang appears to be the actual developer reaching out to you.

@vaughnsc @jonny_kuang As I said, very confusing. The App Store only showed me the one with pro max, which turns out to be the deprecated one. But thanks for posting.

In the end I realised that aside from the settings bug, Ice Cubes @IceCubesApp was the only one I enjoyed using. So I went to their github and reported the settings bug and I’ll start using it when (if?) that gets fixed. Until then I’ll stay with the default web interface.

@drewtowler @vaughnsc @MonaApp check the most recent reviews of Mona Classic aka Mona 6. The developer decided he wasn’t making enough or something, ignored the lifetime subscription, forced users to adopt Mona 7 and pay for it again. Then updated version 6 so half the functionality was broken. Quite the sleazy end for an app I used to enjoy and considered paying for 7 until the 6 update. The catchup mode of Phanpy / iPhanpy sells it for me

@jwd630 ā€œforced users to adopt Mona 7 and pay for it again.ā€
Who forced you?
ā€œhalf the functionality was broken.ā€
What was broken?

Will you not spread false information?

@jwd630 Yep turns out that Mona 7 needs a repeating subscription to allow multiple accounts. I don't mind a one-off purchase but I don't do subscriptions.
