On this occasion of the launch of Artemis II, I need to reshare this.

This is a photo of 8 of the surviving Apollo astronauts, taken on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

The man wearing ... well ... a heat shield, is Buzz Aldrin. I have to imagine his arrival went like this:

PHOTOGRAPHER: Um, Mr. Aldrin, this is a formal portrait.
BUZZ: Do you think I don't know that, son?
PHOTOG: Well, your outfit sir, it's-
BUZZ: Son. I've been to the moon. The mother-lovin' moon. In a tin can running on a graphing calculator powered by a can of sterno.
PHOTOG: Yes sir.
BUZZ: I get to wear what I want, where I want, when I want, for the rest of my life. Do you understand me, son?
PHOTOG: Right this way sir.

And what really gets me is Charlie Duke. He's the guy in the tux with the gold trim. He thought he was going to stand out in this photo. Then in walks Mr. Moon Man.

I have a photo with Buzz that I cannot wait to get unpacked, soon. 🚀👨‍🚀
@drmaddkap
@drmaddkap I do love Buzz. One of the coolest VR experiences I ever had was getting to stand next to him as he was explaining the idea of "cycling pathways to Mars."
@drmaddkap OMG THE SOCKS! absolutely brilliant.
@blogdiva @drmaddkap
I can't stop staring at the socks .. and the whole outfit.
Jean Paul Gaultiere could not teach this man a thing.
@ohmu @blogdiva @drmaddkap Asymmetrical socks, no less.
@jspath55 @ohmu @drmaddkap that are meant to represent the Stars & Bars (aka USA flag)

@drmaddkap one of the coolest things I ever got to do with my mom and dad years ago before my dad died was at an event that I was able to invite my parents to join me at (I’m being a bit detail light because the event is mostly off the record)

At lunch one day we sat at a table with Buzz Aldrin. He was a fellow guest at the same event and we shared a lovely lunch with if memory serves him and the then ambassador to the US from Vietnam.

a cool experience and one I treasure sharing with my dad

@drmaddkap I love that someone made that for him, special. It's his moon tux, shiny and with print of the moon on it.

He reminds me of my highschool geography teacher who had a waistcoat made of material printed with maps (his wife made it for him).

@drmaddkap I have only one comment to this picture: fuck Beau Brummel.
Moonwalkers

Twelve human beings have walked on the Moon, so far. In all, 24 astronauts made the trip from Earth to the Moon between 1968 and 1972.

NASA Science
@gnoll110 Hopefully, with the next moonwalk scheduled for 2028, we won’t have a time when there are no living moonwalkers.

@drmaddkap

What a terrific photo, truly a capturing of history, with personal details shining through. I love it. Things changed so much, it's so good to see how things were before, and how they are now.

@drmaddkap If you ever get a chance, GO to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in DC. Absolutely Incredible. Besides the awesome collection of airplanes suspended above your head as you enter, they have Apollo, Mercury, and Soyuz spacecraft. Those early ones really were like tin cans.
You be you, Moon Man.
@drmaddkap The socks! The socks! Incredible 👍

@drmaddkap

i love that he truly gets into it. not just the silver tux. the stars and stripes socks. the ribbon/medal. 10 of 10.

@drmaddkap "Ol' Charlie's gonna wear what!? Ok, bet."
@drmaddkap Like that time Keith Olberman wore a magenta coat and they stuck him next to Big Bird.
@drmaddkap I love the little inconspicuous black wooden boxes the photographer gave them, so they could put their foot on them for a cooler look. ☺️😂😜
@drmaddkap PS The moon suit is exquisite!
@drmaddkap And the Sox! That is pure class 😘
