My opinion of Spain has grown more and more positive in recent years. Maybe because they had fascism until the 1970s, they have better collective memory of what it entails and how ordinary people suffer.

@SteveK99 Spain just abstained in a UN vote to condemn Transatlantic slavery as a crime against humanity. Every single EU country joined in abstaining. They are till Fascists, just as they were long before Hitler was born. Now they are just more covert & deceitful. It is true that the countries which actually voted no are meaningfully more Fascist, but that is a low bar.

@jonesmurphy Thank you for the interesting and insightful post. I think it's possible to be both against transatlantic slavery and support a progressive socialist leader of a modern European country simultaneously - in fact, possibly the only one at the moment, and certainly the only one standing up to Trump.
Looking at various other news channels, Spain, etc. did not vote against "condemning Transatlantic slavery", they voted against it being considered "the gravest crime against humanity". It's not the same question. Bad as slavery was, is it worse than all other genocides? Native Americans, the Holocaust, etc. I feel sick even attempting to prioritise them.

I'm not Spanish and not a scholar of their country but I can imagine the 800 year occupation of their country by African Muslims may also affect their view on this too.

@SteveK99 what are the chances in your mind that 122 countries(including over 7 billion people) are wrong on this, and that the nearly all majority white countries, led by Trump & Netanyahu, are correct regarding this gravest crime against humanity? I do not feel sick making that comparison at all. Like almost all 'black' people with deep roots in the Americas, I have more Native American DNA than most Federally registered Native Americans. The European slaughter of Native Americans was huge.

@SteveK99 but Africa had a much bigger population when the Europeans started conquering it a century before they 'discovered' the Americas, dragging black African captives with them. We must do that comparison. White folks do not want to do that comparison. The overwhelming majority of the world's people have done that comparison. The European conquest & occupation of Africa cost at minimum tens of millions of lives on both sides of the Atlantic. Slavery itself WAS genocide.

@SteveK99 the last white Empire in Africa didn't end until Mandela took power. Even so, to this day, white South Africans own the overwhelming majority of land & wealth in Africa. Across Africa and the Caribbean in majority-black countries, whites still own a wildly disproportionate share of wealth, and blacks remain on the back foot.
