The idea that the United States was explicitly founded on ‘Judeo-Christian values’ is controversial and untrue. The founding documents – in particular the United States Constitution – are secular. Many of the Founding Fathers were influenced by Enlightenment ideas (reason, individual rights, separation of church and state). The First Amendment to the United States Constitution expressly prohibits the government from establishing a state religion.
