Watched University Challenge with my dad last night for the first time in about 20 years.

Was pleased with myself for getting the maths questions right.

Then I remembered I am a professor of mathematics.

Took the shine off.

@kityates at Caltech, when we went out as a group to dinner and it came time to split the bill, the rule was that the youngest NON-math major was responsible for doing the calculation. We did not trust pure math people to do arithmetic, even at that embryonic stage. (Also, for some reason a MA degree required about 7% less credit hours that engineering and science degrees, causing us to look on them with even more skepticism.)
