Watched University Challenge with my dad last night for the first time in about 20 years.

Was pleased with myself for getting the maths questions right.

Then I remembered I am a professor of mathematics.

Took the shine off.

@kityates I have done a couple of programmes, back in the Gascoigne era. It appears to be a lot harder these days. I doubt I would bother the buzzer much now - I blame pub quizzes.
@kityates I just shout "Pi!" at the TV. One day I'll be right.
@kityates you reminded me of the Young Ones episode
@kityates My nephew is supposed to be on an upcoming show! I need to figure out where I can watch it online.
@kityates at Caltech, when we went out as a group to dinner and it came time to split the bill, the rule was that the youngest NON-math major was responsible for doing the calculation. We did not trust pure math people to do arithmetic, even at that embryonic stage. (Also, for some reason a MA degree required about 7% less credit hours that engineering and science degrees, causing us to look on them with even more skepticism.)

@kityates

Did your dad tell you to stop being a show-off? :)

@kityates I remember many years ago just after I had graduated, reading a piece about how difficult VCRs were to program - never been a problem I thought - unless you have a electronics degree the article continued. Um yeah guilty there.
