@FediVideo I'm wondering, how much people must pay to watch #Fantasmagorie when it released on 1908. It's shorter than 2 minutes

@adhisimon @FediVideo Most films at the time were not much longer than that - typically 5 to 10 minutes.

Cinemas in the US in 1908 cost a nickel (5 cents) and were known as "nickelodeons". They showed a series of short films one after the other. You paid your nickel, went in, watched for as long as you wanted, and left.

@robinadams @adhisimon

Yup, cinemas were more like television back then. It wasn't just fiction films, there were also news bulletins, sports events, documentaries etc.

There also used to be specialist cinemas devoted entirely to news, the equivalent of a rolling news channel today. You paid to go in and catch up, then leave when you wanted.

TV was then invented and took over, especially as sets became cheaper, and the only thing left that people preferred in the cinema were long form films.

@FediVideo @robinadams yes, feels like I'm watching an episode of some serries on cable. Watch in the middle because too late at the begining, and waiting for the replay few hours again to watch the begining
@FediVideo sure wish I could open that in any way whatsoever on my Peertube account, but no. believe me, I tried.

@deutrino

What is it you're trying to do?

You don't need a PeerTube account to watch and interact with PeerTube videos.

Copy-paste a PeerTube video or account's address into the search box in Mastodon, this will make it appear in Mastodon and you can follow, reply, favourite etc. Replies in Mastodon appear as comments in PeerTube, favourites in Mastodon appear as thumbs up, follows are subscriptions.

You only really need a PeerTube account if you want to upload videos or create playlists.

@FediVideo was trying to open the playlist and/or channel in my Peertube account so I could potentially subscribe / federate it to my account's instance if it hadn't been. I tried multiple ways and none worked even to the point of acknowledging that the channel or playlist exist.

it's not like the instance (spectra.video) is poorly connected. it's just frustrating to see Peertube still so difficult after so many years and with Youtube in a steep slide into terminal enshittification mode.

@deutrino

Okay, thanks for the info.

Could I ask what specifically you did? Were you copy-pasting stuff or clicking on stuff or whatever? Were you using the web or the app? Which channel were you trying to open?

I'm asking so I can try to feed this back to the developers and make it easier ๐Ÿ™‚ They've been pretty responsive if there have been problems, there is a lot of stuff they have fixed based on feedback. It will be easier for them to fix it if I can give specific details of the problem.

@FediVideo
Thank you for the list! However, I would appreciate if there were more videos also in other languages than English, for example in French and German.

@jopa

Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

I would love to include all languages, but it makes it a lot harder to moderate the content of the videos. The idea of the https://fedi.video website is to only include accounts that have been checked.

If you want to search a much less filtered selection of videos in all languages, there's the PeerTube developers' own search engine at https://sepiasearch.org (but this isn't curated so it may contain unsafe videos).
