I really want a Linux phone now… I see if I can get a pixel 9 and install #grapheneOS (my understanding is that is not android or a very stripped version of android)

Hi @a
What do you mean by a linux phone?

Android use Linux and there is project like grapheneOs that are based on Android.

There is also other project that doesn't use android, only Linux, like #postmarketos. They are very differents.

@lascapi yeah I’m not 100% what exactly I want except that (1) I don’t want vanilla android (2) I want to be able to treat my phone as a regular computer (eg add scripts, install libraries etc)

@a
If you don't mind libhybris or Halium you have more options: e.g. droidian or Ubuntu touch / ubports

Have you had a look at the latest Jolla Phone with Sailfish OS or the FLX1s by Furi Labs, yet?
@lascapi

@f_g @lascapi I checked Jolla (actually I sent them an email long time ago but 🦗) and they don’t seem to ship to the us . Will check flx1s then.
@a @lascapi then likely PMOS is the best choice. But don't expect android levels of performance. . .
@davidoclubb @lascapi I’m in China right now so I’m looking if I can get my hands on a used phone once but it seems the best option is to buy one once I come back home

@a be careful. Yes you can run GrapheneOS as a stripped down android. By default there is none of the well known apps from Google installed. You will find repots about the superior data privacy of that setup.

And you will find reports from people not missing anything on grapheneOS. These people run Google apps. Lose a huge part of privacy but still have superior defence against intelligence agencies.

I regard those two setups as incompatible. Just like two different custom ROM.

@Kurt I don’t use google apps in my life
@a what did you use so far?
@Kurt on mobile? iOS plus a bunch of self hosted services
@a android is different. Many services that run in the background of iOS are packed into Google play services and store on android. Without those you will suffer a significant loss of usability and app compatibility. Projects like #microG and #eOS try to fill that gap.
@Kurt like location and similar I guess?
@a wifi based location estimation. Instant notifications. Purchases and license checks. Face unlock. Carplay. Game synchronization. ...
