Wow, whenever I stray off the Fedi path and end up on other social media, I'm reminded how wholesome y'all are! 🥰

When I post here, I only get the occasional reply guy, troll KYSses, or slightly inappropriate comment.

Out there I see some of the most repugnant shit.

I like it here much better.

@alice I'm surprised often by people who (were) still on what was Twitter, where actual neo Nazis are flaming them, and over here someone asks them nicely to add alt text and they get all bent out of shape. LOL. 🤷

@ai6yr @alice I wish to be heard as someone who has often tried to use sm as last ditch effort to be heard, as a disabled person, only for the debasement of "no alt text, must be ableist" when sometimes i can't type that much or a mis-swipe deletes my draft and i have to settle.

I know as an invisible, disabled nobody surviving this i'll never earn trust nor clout amid my peers due to shit like that, and the solution is to not be fascist abt alt text. I use it. I'm also literally limited energy

@bug honestly, no one should be attacking you for not using alt-text, but I fully believe folx shouldn't post or boost things without alt-text as a general¹ rule.

Accessibility raises all boats.

¹ if the community was such that only folx who couldn't post alt-text didn't post alt-text, then Fedi would be *so* much more accessible for everyone, and it would be easy to help out the folx who can't post it via @altbot and #Alt4Me.

We can—and should—accommodate both.

@ai6yr

@alice I thought about it, so far I've noted 3 scenarios where I can boost images without alt-text:

  • if the person uses their art as a form of expression precisely because they can't verbalize (and they won't let another person verbalize it),
  • if the person shows something difficult for them to describe (because of a trauma...),
  • if the person has general difficulties to write full alt-texts and doesn't dare to ask everytime (it's totally ok to ask!)

I know people in each case, I don't want them to feel unwelcome here

@ilusenn if someone is making someone (who isn't a bigot) feel unwelcome here, then they're doing community-building wrong.
@alice @ilusenn friends you write very sweet words and it's nice
