Crawford LongI'm perplexed by #andyweir's comments about #startrek. He's apologized, so he knows he was incorrect, but I'm simply surprised that Weir (a) thinks that he's not political and (b) doesn't think Trek is deeply political. Two of Weir's 3 books have a male protagonist (and, though I'm not sure it's stated explicitly, a white male protagonist). That is a creative choice, a potentially revealing one, even if it was not intentional. Creative choices and politics are closely intertwined.
Weir not being a fan of most new Trek isn't a problem. I don't like most new Trek. It's the whole non-political aside he makes that's weird and problematic.
