Start your film with a J-cut over black, and you have hooked my heart from the outset.
Start your film with a J-cut over black, and you have hooked my heart from the outset.
Why? Because you've engaged my senses and triggered my curiosity to know more about this storyworld.
Plus it's an elegant editing choice that gives me confidence in what I'm about to watch.
It really is an editing choice that gives me great joy.
I just turned on "Night in Paradise" / 낙원의 밤 (South Korea, 2020) on Netflix. It starts with a great J-cut, if you'd like to check out an example.
Credit to writer/director Park Hoon-jung and editor Lae-won Jang.
*I have a gut feeling about how this will pay off at the end of the film. I'll try to remember to report back if I turn out to be correct.
@bojidar_bg J-cuts and L-cuts give me life.
I hope you have fun with it!
@ShaulaEvans I dunno a lot of film making vocab, so I looked this up...
"The name of the cut refers to the shape of audio and video pieces of the second of two scenes cut together when it was done on analog film, forming a shape similar to the letter 'J' on the timeline. The tail of the 'J' represents the audio from the next clip, while the main body represents the video from the previous clip." (from the Wikipedia entry)
... and the reason behind the name delighted me so much.
