The wild thing is when you fly from Melbourne to Cairns, via Brisbane. It takes you 2 hours to get to Brissy, at which point you think, well, surely we're almost there?
Nope. Now it's 2 more hours from Brissy to Cairns. It's just bonkers massive.

Would it not make more sense to compare it size-wise to the Sahara?
20-30% of Australia is reasonably habitable with current technology (don't forget climate change), and actually 5% of it has >90% of the population; they all live within 50-150 km of the coast.
