Australia is BIG

(via reddit)

@infobeautiful Can confirm. Is true.

The wild thing is when you fly from Melbourne to Cairns, via Brisbane. It takes you 2 hours to get to Brissy, at which point you think, well, surely we're almost there?

Nope. Now it's 2 more hours from Brissy to Cairns. It's just bonkers massive.

@infobeautiful Maine and Ohio like, "wtf did we do? We're just states."
@infobeautiful Why is Austria so special it's in there twice?
@infobeautiful Ohio is a fine place for Tasmanian Devils.
@infobeautiful
The unnamed country is Denmark
@infobeautiful This is quite surprising to me, I've never seen so many of them put close to each other. And by the way, I thought Australia to be bigger!

@infobeautiful

Australia is so big it takes three days just to change your mind. 😎

@infobeautiful Why does the alt text say Australia is larger than the U.S.? Are you including the Australian Antarctic Territories?
@Rgsharpe @infobeautiful more likely they got a figure for the contiguous US, which is slightly smaller than Australia.
@infobeautiful I love how close they came to getting Portland, ME to align with Portland, VIC...

@infobeautiful

some places measure up a little stronger...still, though, freaking huge.

20-30% of Australia is reasonably habitable with current technology (don't forget climate change), and actually 5% of it has >90% of the population; they all live within 50-150 km of the coast.

@infobeautiful it's big but it's totally useless
@infobeautiful Let's hope that Trump doesn't know that!
@infobeautiful now I understand why my ex-in-laws made such a fuss about driving to Coffs Harbour to get a break from Sydney.
@infobeautiful Yes it's big but it's just peanuts when compared to space.
@infobeautiful Australia is a smallish country stretched around the edge of a huge desert
@infobeautiful if only Sri Lanka were a little larger so it could replace Ohio
Astrophotography Western Australia | A fun fact. The Moon is only 3474 KMs wide | Facebook

A fun fact. The Moon is only 3474 KMs wide. While Australia is just over 4,000 KMs wide at its extreme points. So by overlaying one of my full moon images, we can get an idea of its actual size. It's...

@infobeautiful What here is supposed to be Poland?
@infobeautiful I think this is why Australians and Canadians get along:
