I've been waiting for Auracast to become a thing for a while now. I really hope it will eventually become available at chaos/hacker events (#CCC, #EMF, etc) because these lecture halls often have a lot of ambient noise that I find hard to filter out. Being able to just put on headphones and listen to the audio directly from the microphone would really help.

Here is a video I found describing it (2nd half):

What happens when you switch a hearing aid to the T position?

@ayke android supports auracast receiving and transmitting now, but it seems like it requires headphones that support ble audio. hopefully that requirement goes away at some point and more transmitters start to appear.

@artemist Sadly no :/
It's only supported on some Android phones. I'm on Android 16 (Fairphone 6) and it's not supported. I was really hoping it would be.

(Also, Auracast is built on top of LE Audio: the headphones pick up the signal directly instead of going via the phone. The phone just selects which channel to listen to. So it's highly unlikely it'll ever be available for older headphones).

@ayke i guess i'll have to find a ble to headphone jack adapter or some linux test auracast receiver, since i have never had any good experiences with wireless headphones
@artemist This is being worked on for Linux, but seems to not be quite ready and also requires special support in the Bluetooth radio.
